I had originally learned a little bit about calligraphy and Chinese painting back in 5th grade, for an “Apprenticeship” project, in which we had to learn a skill and document it. I wrote out a poem and painted a panda eating bamboo. I continued to dabble in it occasionally up until high school, when I got a job working as a counselor for a Chinese culture-focused summer camp. I would herd the kids for most of the weeks, and then for a couple days I would teach them how to paint. I had to diversify beyond pandas and bamboos to satisfy the whims of the campers (not that they would stick to what I would give them as examples), so I experimented and taught myself more ways to use that signature brush.
